My Favourite European Destinations for Culture + Relaxation

When I think about my favourite trips, it’s never just about the hotel or the weather.

It’s about how the place felt.

The ones I come back from feeling genuinely rested are always the same kind of destination, somewhere that balances culture and calm. Somewhere you can explore, but not feel rushed. Somewhere that invites you to slow down.

For me, one place captures that perfectly: Rhodes.

The magic of an old town

There’s something about an old town that instantly changes the pace of a trip.

In Rhodes Old Town, you’re walking through cobbled streets that feel like they’ve barely changed for centuries. Stone buildings, hidden courtyards, small shops tucked into corners - it’s the kind of place where you don’t need a plan.

You can wander for hours, turning down whichever street looks interesting, stopping when something catches your eye.

That’s what I love most - there’s no pressure to “see everything”. You just… explore.

Walkability changes everything

One of the biggest differences between a good trip and a great one is how easy it is to get around.

Places like Rhodes are incredibly walkable, especially around the old town and nearby areas. You’re not constantly relying on taxis or trying to figure out transport - everything feels close, simple, and manageable.

That ease creates space.

Space to slow down. Space to stop for a drink when you feel like it. Space to actually enjoy where you are, instead of rushing between places.

Food that becomes part of the day

Some destinations are built around sightseeing. Others are built around living well.

Rhodes sits firmly in the second category.

Meals aren’t rushed. Tables spill out onto the streets. Lunch turns into a long, relaxed pause in the day rather than something you squeeze in between plans.

It’s less about ticking off “the best restaurants” and more about finding somewhere that feels right in the moment - a shaded terrace, a quiet square, somewhere you can sit and stay a while.

Food becomes part of the rhythm of the trip, not just something you fit around it.

A slower, softer pace

What really sets places like Rhodes apart is the pace of life.

You can explore in the morning, spend time by the coast in the afternoon, and head back out in the evening without feeling like you’ve overdone it.

There’s a natural balance.

You’re not trying to pack everything in. You’re not coming back feeling like you need another holiday to recover.

Instead, you leave feeling like you’ve actually had a break.
